A tender is planned for the lease of commercial spaces – hotel, restaurant, and souvenir shop, which will increase the tourist attractiveness and utilization of the newly renovated cultural heritage and create new accommodation capacities. The tender will encompass a total of over 1100 m² of interior and exterior spaces and will be awarded for a period of 30 years with an initial rent price of 3.00 EUR/m². Within the ship Galeb, a portion of the upper deck interior with a total area of 323 m² and 3002 open deck, as well as a portion of the main deck with a total area of 441 m² for accommodation facilities, will be leased for hospitality activities. The commercial space being leased is in an unfinished construction phase, and it is the lessee's obligation to arrange the space in accordance with the special conditions of the Ministry of Culture and with the consent of the City of Rijeka. As future lessees will be making significant financial investments in the interior design of the spaces within the ship, lessees will be exempt from paying rent for the first five years of the contract. The conditions for leasing parts of the ship Galeb were adopted by the City Council of Rijeka at its session on December 19, 2020.
Potential partners and collaborators in the project are free to engage in cooperation, development, and promotion of temporary or permanent cultural content, events, and other activities that the ship will offer, in consultation with the Department of Municipal Administration for Culture and municipal cultural institutions.

Since 2017, the ship Galeb has been part of the EU project “Touristic Valorization of Representative Monuments of Rijeka’s Industrial Heritage.” As part of this project, the reconstruction and conversion of the ship are underway for the needs of the Museum of the City of Rijeka, enriched with a permanent exhibition on the history of the ship and accompanying tourist-commercial facilities (hotel, restaurant, and souvenir shop). Upon completion of the works, the ship will be moored in the port of Rijeka.
The reconstruction and conversion of the ship Galeb are currently underway for the needs of the Museum of the City of Rijeka and associated tourist-commercial facilities. Upon completion of the reconstruction and outfitting, the ship will offer an attractive permanent museum exhibition on the history of the ship, occasional exhibitions, open-air cinema, and creative workshops within a total area of 5,565 m². In addition to its cultural purpose, Galeb will also have commercial use – a hotel, restaurant, and souvenir shop, which will be offered to potential lessees through a tender process. It is expected that these facilities will further increase the tourist attractiveness and utilization of the newly renovated cultural heritage and create new accommodation capacities that the center of Rijeka lacks.
The reconstruction of the existing ship does not alter its external appearance; instead, new content is accommodated within the space with minimal interventions. New safety and technical systems are being introduced to enable modern use and development of museum activities. The shipyard Dalmont from Kraljevica has been selected as the contractor for the renovation of Galeb, with the planned completion of works, including outfitting the ship and housing the Museum of the City of Rijeka, expected during 2023. Designer Nikolina Jelavić Mitrović, recipient of the European Museum of the Year award for her work at the City Museum of Vukovar, and the author of the award-winning exhibition at the Sinjska Alka Museum, has been engaged for the design of the new permanent exhibition. The project envisages the ship to be stationed in the heart of the port of Rijeka and to enhance the cultural and artistic offerings in the city of Rijeka with its rich content.
